Spooky Season – Fear Not

Faith is the victory. Faith is the victory. Oh glorious victory that overcomes the world… Thats the song I’m singing today.

Last night we started our spooky season movie marathon. We chose the movie Scream. I don’t remember ever watching. If I did, it was many eons ago and I don’t remember it. I actually liked it and I wasn’t scared at all. I found the movie to be very suspenseful and somewhat cheesy – like most movies from the 90’s.

I don’t know what we will watch tonight. Maybe, Annabelle? I don’t know yet. I do know Hocus Pocus, and The Nightmare Before Christmas is on the list.

Now, I know there is much controversy in all things Halloween. There are those who believe that they should have nothing to do with Halloween. Thou shalt not watch spooky, scary, witchy, movies. Then there are people, who do trick or treating in fun, and do watch spooky movies. Which one is right? I can’t judge. I also know that God did not put a spirit of fear inside us.

2 Timothy 1:7 – For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

There are some movies that I will steer clear of. I do not like the bloody, gory, cruel movies like Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or Nightmare on Elm Street. Final Destination gives me the ultimate heebie jeebies. AND…I absolutely hate, hate, going to haunted houses. Nope. No how. No way.

But…see? Everyday God has a given me a sound mind to know what I, personally, should stay away from. I will honor that. If any other person feels they should steer clear of everything Halloween, then they should honor that. It’s not just Fear Not but it’s also Fear God, which means showing honor and reverence to.

The Bible has over 500 verses about fearing not and fearing God.

Isaiah 41:10 fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

When I am watching scary, spooky movies, I don’t need to be afraid. When I feel like the world is a dark and scary place, I don’t need to be anxious. I know, who has my back – the God who created this world, the God who saved me, who loved me before I was even born. God, who supplies all my need and cares more about me than the lilies of the fields and the tiny baby sparrows. He knows when to set my adrenaline rushing – like when I thought I was going to drown in the Arkansas River in Salida, CO. He is the only one who can protect me from the fiery darts and the arrows that fly by night. I am covered with the blood of Jesus Christ.

When I watched the movie The Conjuring for the first time, I wanted to jump out of my seat at the end and yell YES! AMEN! GLORY TO GOD! At the end of the movie she vanquishes the demon back to hell IN THE NAME OF JESUS! There was Victory in the name of Jesus. Spiritual warfare is real. With our armor on and God fighting for us there is no need to fear. God will always win. I don’t want to be scared of things that go bump in the night, or jump at every unknown sound. And, I’m still not going to any haunted houses…

Do you watch scary movies? Or stay away from all things scary? Do you believe in spiritual warfare?

God’s got my back.

Positively, Debbie
